General
Students learn about the geography, way of life, and the contributions of the Yellow River Civilizations. The lesson describes the Shang and Zhou Dynasties. Students engage in discussions, fill in graphic organizers, and complete a creative, critical-thinking writing task.
Learning Objective
Students will be able to compare and contrast the gender roles, access to wealth and power, and division of labor within the political and social structures of the selected river valley societies and civilizations. Students will examine the unique achievements of each of the selected complex societies and civilizations that served as lasting contributions and describe how physical characteristics of river valleys supported permanent settlements and the rise of early civilizations.
Introduction
Introduce the Yellow River civilizations and have students observe the two pictures on the board. Then see if they can predict the answers to the questions presented. Describe the geography of China and have students drag the pin to the different locations on the map.
Instruction
Discuss how China’s geography affected the Yellow River civilizations, including the Yellow and Yangtze Rivers. Ask students how China’s location may have helped the growth of the civilizations there. Next, introduce the Shang Dynasty and describe their contributions. Explain what a dynastic cycle is and the importance of family in ancient Chinese culture. After this, describe the early Chinese writing system and other significant contributions before moving on to the Zhou Dynasty. Have students work together to fill in the graphic organizer with 6 words they would use to describe the Yellow River civilizations.
