Words that suggest feelings

In this lesson, students will learn how to use words and phrases in texts to understand how characters are feeling. They will look at different emotion words and see how an author might choose to tell or show what a character is feeling.

Learning objective

Students will be able to identify words and phrases that suggest feelings.

Introduction

Students will turn and talk to a partner about their observations of a photograph. They will determine the emotion the woman in the photograph is feeling. Identifying the words or phrases that suggest feelings helps students better understand characters in stories.

Instruction

Authors can either tell us ("He was sad.") or show us ("He cried.") how characters in their stories feel. They can use emotions to tell the reader how characters feel. Students will look at examples of how authors do that. When authors show the reader how characters feel, the reader can infer how the characters feel. Students will look at examples where they have to infer.

Students will read sentences and underline the words or phrase that tells how the character felt. They will also read sentences that show what a character did. They will identify the emotion that the character felt. They will then read two stories and determine how the characters felt.

Students will recall what they learned in this lesson. They will then complete two closing activities where they will match sentences with the corresponding emotions.
