Learning objective
Students will be able to identify a wildfire and explain how to prepare for one.
Introduction
Students are asked to turn and talk with a partner about fires and what they know about house fires. Start by defining what a wildfire is with the class. Explain that they are uncontrolled fires that occur in a forest, grassland, or brushland. Watch the video to give students a visual understanding of what wildfires look like and to give more information about wildfires. Then ask students to answer the questions on the right with the information they just learned in the video.
Instruction
Explain the 'how' and 'when' of wildfires by discussing how wildfires are created and that they tend to occur in the summer, fall and winter, when it is dry and there are high winds. Then explain the 'who' and 'where' of wildfires by defining what fire ecologists do and where wildfires occur, mostly in forests and places that have drought. Discuss what to do if you find yourself in a wildfire by discussing what to do before, during and after a wildfire. The first step for before a wildfire is to learn how to prevent wildfires. The best way to prevent wildfires is to not start them. The next steps are to create an escape route and to remove flammable things from your house. During a wildfire, be prepared to evacuate at any moment and keep your windows and doors closed. If you stay at home, wet your roof and property and save receipts. After a wildfire, gather basic supplies. Enter your house carefully and don't drink the water until authorities have said it is safe. Have students fill in the blanks with words from the word bank.

Closing
Discuss the learning goal with students and check to see if they can identify a wildfire and determine what to do during a wildfire. Close the lesson by having students create a preparedness plan for a wildfire and have students share their completed plans.
Teaching tips
If you live in a location that has a high likelihood of wildfires, you may choose to incorporate that into your lesson with locations or areas that students are familiar with. Since some students are very scared of natural hazards, be sure to reassure them that by following the steps given and being prepared, they increase their survival chances in these situations.
