This lesson helps students understand the true meaning of Veterans Day, to honor the military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Students will be able to explain why we honor veterans on Veterans Day.
Begin by filling out the KWL chart and having students write down what they know about the holiday and what they still want to know. They will return to this activity at the end of the lesson to list what they learned. After this, explain what Veterans Day is.
Begin by defining the word “veteran” and explain why we celebrate on November 11. Students will then write an acrostic poem for the word “Veteran.” Go over how to write an acrostic by modeling with a poem for the word “soldier.” Next, teach students about the different branches of the United States Armed Forces. Provide an overview of each of these branches.
Students respond to 5 discussion questions. Take some time to discuss these prompts with your students or have them work in groups/pairs.
Have students think of ways we can honor the sacrifices veterans have made on this day. Are there any special events that take place in their neighborhood or town? Finally, they will write a thank you letter to a veteran. There is a space provided on the interactive whiteboard to brainstorm ideas with the class.
