Read the conversation written on the board and compare the two versions. Explain what precise language is and its effect on writing.
Begin by showing students how to use more precise nouns in their writing and share the examples, comparing generic words to more specific nouns. Have students read two passages and determine which nouns are more specific. Analyze how it affects the passage, making it clearer for the reader. Students will then practice using precise nouns by rewriting the sentences displayed on the board and changing the red word to a more specific noun. Do the same thing for precise verbs and modifiers. Next, have students read the passage from “Little Women.” How does the author use precise words and phrases? You can choose to have students come up to the board to annotate the text. Finally, students will draw a line to match the general words to their more precise version.
Students respond to 10 questions in which their understanding of key concepts in the lesson is checked.
Spin the wheel to get a sentence. Have students write the sentence down. After this, they will use the worksheet and graphic organizer to rewrite the sentence using more precise and descriptive language. An example is done already for students to reference.
