Students will be able to name and describe how the author and illustrator of a text present information.
Students will turn and talk about if they like writing words or drawing pictures more during writing time. They will discuss why it is important to understand how authors and illustrators present information in books.
Students will talk about what authors are and what they do. They will also see how to find the author's name on the cover of a book. They will talk about illustrators and what they do. They'll also look at a book cover to see where they might find the illustrator's name. Sometimes students may see illustrations and photographs in books. They will look at the differences between the two.
Students will match the roles of "author" and "illustrator" to their descriptions. They will look at three book covers and underline the authors' and illustrators' names. They will also look at books on the slide and circle the work done by authors and illustrators. They will then sort text and pictures into the categories, "author" and "illustrator," to credit them for their work. Students will read a passage about having a pet and answer four questions about it.
Review the roles of authors, illustrators, and nonfiction books.
Students will recall the authors' and illustrators' jobs and why they are important. They will read "Spaghetti in Tomato Sauce Recipe" and use the spinner to decide the questions they will answer.
