Students will be able to compare and contrast key details in texts.
Students will take turns playing a matching game (memory). Discuss why it is important to compare and contrast when reading.
Show students vocabulary they will see used for comparing (e.g., similar, alike) and contrasting (e.g., different, however). Students will sort words used for comparing and contrasting. Next, they will read a passage about animals and highlight similarities and differences. They will drag sentences about butterflies and bees to their respective spots in the Venn diagram. They will do a similar activity with statements about dogs and cats. Next, they will read a passage about lions and tigers and highlight similarities and differences. They will drag words, like "alike" and "while," to fill in the blanks of a passage about lions and tigers. Students will compare and contrast bears and rabbits, and sharks and dolphins.
Students will respond to 10 questions in which they review key concepts from the lesson.
Students will recall:
- Why is comparing and contrasting an important skill?
- What are some words that show we are comparing?
- What are some words that show we are contrasting?
Students will compare and contrast a ladybug and a caterpillar (and an elephant and giraffe) using specific words decided by a spinner.
