In this lesson, students will practice determining the time difference or elapsed time between digital clocks. Students will be given the skills to find the time that has passed between two events. They will learn the “Mountain Method” to calculate elapsed time with whole hours, half hours, quarter hours, and to the nearest minute. Then, students will complete several activities in which they practice calculating elapsed time.

Learning Objective
Students will be able to properly calculate elapsed time with digital clocks.
Introduction
Students will review how to read digital clocks properly. Then students will discuss their answers to 3 elapsed time word problems with their classmates.
Instruction
The lesson will begin with students writing down what they already know about digital clocks and elapsed time. Then students will watch a video in which they review how to utilize the “Mountain Method” to solve for elapsed time. Students will be guided through an example, then be asked to solve a word problem on their own by utilizing the mountain method and dragging the symbols. Then students will complete several activities to practice what they learned in the lesson, including solving for the elapsed time in a fall-themed activity and competing in an elapsed time Gynzy Game Show with their classmates.

Closing
Students will calculate the elapsed time from the time they get in line to the time they get on two rides at their favorite amusement park.
