Students will be able to identify time and sequence in technical texts.
Students will think about times they've used texts to help them complete a task or figure out how to do something. They will discuss different types of technical texts, including cookbooks and recipes, manuals, directions, websites, trade/"How-to" books, and instructions. Students will look at signal words authors of technical texts may use.
Students will read the steps to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and put them in the correct order. After that, they will talk to a classmate about why it is important to follow the steps of a recipe. Next, they will read a mixed-up passage called "How to Produce Milk" and put the passage in order according to the signal words. They will turn and talk to a partner about how they did that. They will also read a game manual for a battleship game and answer questions about it.
Review technical texts with ten questions that review key terminology and are asked to apply the terms to a given text.
Have students recall what they learned in this lesson, including examples of technical texts. Lastly, students will spin the wheel to choose a technical text to write ("How-to," recipe, or game instructions/manual).
