Students learn about time and sequence in technical procedures by reading different types of technical passages including recipes and other “how-to” texts. They will also identify sequence clue words.

Learning objective

Students will be able to describe the relationship between a series of steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect.

Introduction

Ask students to organize the pictures on the interactive whiteboard so that they tell a story. Then have them "tell" the story. Explain that a technical procedure is the steps that you take to complete a task. Sequencing procedures are important to ensure things are done correctly. Ask students to think about what might happen if you do not follow a sequence of steps.

Instruction

Students drag images to place them in the correct order. Introduce students to sequence clue words for steps, in the beginning, middle, and end of a procedure. Next, read a passage about making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Students circle the clue words that show sequences like “first,” “then,” and “finally.” After this, students drag the numbers 1-5 to show the correct sequence for making the sandwich. Read another passage, “How to Build a Sandcastle” then drag the steps in the correct order. Finally, students learn about recipes and how to read/follow them.

Quiz

Students respond to 10 questions. They will read a technical text, “How to Plant a Seed,” and respond to questions related to the sequence of steps.

Closing

Review what students have learned. Then students will write the steps for something they are an expert at doing. Have students use appropriate clue words before sharing with a partner.
