This lesson teaches students about the creation of Black History Month by the “Father of Black History,” Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Students will understand why Black History Month is celebrated and learn about prominent African American figures like Thurgood Marshall, Serena Williams, Harriet Tubman, and more. Students will also have the opportunity to explore and discuss The Association for the Study of African American Life and History's 2021 theme for Black History Month: The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity.

Students complete the sentence, “We celebrate Black History Month because…” They will review what Black History Month is and when it is celebrated.
The lesson teaches about “The Father of Black History,” Dr. Carter G. Woodson who believed in the importance of educating people about African American history. Students will learn about how Black History Month came to be and why it is celebrated today.
Introduce the 2021 theme for Black History Month: The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity. Discuss the meaning of this theme and the importance of representation, identity, and diversity in our world today. After this, students think about ways we can celebrate and acknowledge important and well-known African American figures in our history.

After going through the lesson, students will come back to the opening statement, “We celebrate Black History Month because…” and brainstorm ideas on how they can celebrate the achievements of African Americans.
