In this lesson, students will learn how to paraphrase information they research using the acronym PARA. They will read a few passages and practice extracting the important information and paraphrasing it.

Learning objective
Students will be able to paraphrase text when summarizing research writing.
Introduction
Invite students to discuss in pairs what they did after school yesterday. Make the connection that students shared a summary of what they did and did not tell every single detail.
Instruction
Define paraphrasing and summarizing and explain the importance of writers using these skills in research writing. Students will be introduced to the acronym PARA (Put it in your own words. Avoid copying directly what was read or said. Rearrange similar text in a way that makes sense. Ask yourself if you've included all the important parts.)
Next, students will talk about where they would like to go on vacation. Partner A will answer the prompt, and Partner B will summarize and paraphrase Partner A's answer in 2 sentences. Then, they will switch roles.
Students will then read two passages and use the acronym PARA to paraphrase the important information in 2-3 sentences.

Students will answer 6 true/false and 4 multiple-choice questions.
Closing
Students will recall what they learned about summarizing and paraphrasing. They will use the acronym PARA to paraphrase their own research notes.
