In this lesson, students will use the main ideas and key details to help them write summaries. Students will read several passages and find the main idea and key details. Using "Main Idea + Key Details = Summary" method, they will write summaries to the passages in this lesson. They will also evaluate written summaries.

Students will be able to summarize informational text.
Students will watch a video about the water cycle and discuss the most important thing to know about the water cycle. They will also discuss the main idea and key details of the video. Explain why it is important to be able to summarize informational text.
Go over the concept of main idea and key details. Students will read a passage titled, "Tough Turtles," and find the main idea and key details. Next, they will summarize the passage in their own words using the template: "Main Idea + Key Details = Summary." They will also read a passage called, "Hot-Air Balloons" and determine the main idea and key ideas. They will read another passage about Benjamin Franklin. Then, they will read two summaries of the passage and pick the one the best summarizes Benjamin Franklin. Have students justify which summary they picked.
Students will answer ten questions in which they answer questions reviewing key concepts in the lesson. They are also asked to identify main ideas and key details.
Students will recall what they learned;
- What is a summary?
- How do good readers summarize informational text?
Lastly, students will write a summary of a passage titled, "Flightless with Feathers."
