Whether we realize it or not, every story has a structure that helps us follow and be interested by it:
- Exposition is the introduction that shows the reader the characters and setting
- Rising action is the part of the story that develops conflict and leads to the climax of the story
- Climax is the turning point for the character where conflict is at it's peak
- The falling action guides us from the climax to the resolution of the story
- Resolution is where the main conflict of the narrative is solved or resolved in some way
When beginning a story of your own, it is helpful to think through the main conflict that the characters will face in the story.
