Students will be able to spell frequently occurring irregular spelled words.
Students will look at a picture and fill in the words with missing letters below the picture. Explain why it is important to spell words phonetically.
Explain the concept of irregularly spelled words, such as "heavy" or "warm." Students will sort six words, including "pig" and "calf," by whether they can sound them out or not. Students will write the irregularly spelled words, "you," "are," "put," "who," "most," and "was." They will also look at pictures and circle the correctly spelled words. Next, they will look at pictures with incorrectly spelled captions and write the word correctly. Students will also determine whether a group of irregularly spelled words, including "block" and "skat," are spelled correctly. Then, they will look at pairs of words. Each pair has a correctly spelled word and an incorrectly spelled word. Students will determine which word in each pair is correct.
Students will answer ten questions which practice frequently occurring irregularly spelled words..
Students will recall what they learned:
- How can you recognize an irregular spelled word?
- Can you give an example of an irregularly spelled word?
Together as a class, students will read words and decide whether they are spelled correctly. Lastly, they will spin the wheel to decide which word they need to spell.
