Students learn to skip count in 10s to 100 in different contexts. They also learn that it is useful to first count the groups of 10 and then the remaining items.
K.CC.A.1
Explain that it is useful to be able to skip count in 10s to increase your counting speed.
Select, depending on the number of students in your classroom, a range of sequential numbers cards between 60 and 90. Give the students a number card randomly and then ask them to stand in the right numerical order. You can do this as a whole class or in small groups.
Explain that when you skip count in 10s, you always count 10 more. The interactive whiteboard shows the numbers from 1 to 50, with all of the 10s numbers in blue. You can ask students which 10s numbers you still need to count up to 100. Explain that these are important numbers for skip counting in 10s. Next students count the amount of ice cubes and fish on the interactive whiteboard. Encourage students to use skip counting in 10s. First count the groups of 10, then count the remaining objects. You can also practice this with the apples and stars on the interactive whiteboard.
To check that students can skip count in 10s to 100 you can ask the following questions:
- What is skip counting?
- Why is it useful to be able to skip count in 10s?
- If you have many groups of 10, and a few remaining objects, which do you count first? Why?
Students first practice skip counting in 10s with images of objects clearly grouped in 10s. Next students practice with boxes containing 10 objects. They cannot individually count the objects. Encourage students to first skip count the tens, and then count the remaining objects. Ask students to count out loud as much as possible.
Check that students are able to skip count in 10s to 100 and are able to explain that this means counting 10 more to a number. Emphasize that skip counting in 10s makes counting faster. Check that students are able to skip count in 10s by doing the exercise on the interactive whiteboard together. Students decide how many are needed to make a number. You can drag the and _ to the box with the number.
Students who are challenged by this will count the objects 1 by 1. Encourage them to skip count in 10s by practicing saying the numbers in jumps of 10 on the number line. Also practice counting on from 10, from 20, etc.
