Regions of the United States: The Southeast

Guided by The Five Themes of Geography, this lesson provides an overview of the Southeast. Weblinks and video enhance the content and engage the students in discussion and practice activities.

Learning objective

Students will be able to describe the Southeast in terms of the 5 themes of Geography

Introduction

Students will participate in an activity uncovering mystery tourist sites of the Southeast. They are also encouraged to extend their thinking by sharing their experiences as a tourist of our country.

Instruction

As each of the five themes are discussed, students will relate them to the Southeast. The theme of Location discusses these states in regards to their position to the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. The features of the inland states include information on the Piedmont and Fall Line of the Appalachians. In this section, students can practice the states and capitals with a self-checking activity. The theme of Place shares information on the wetlands and swamps with a video on the wildlife of the Everglades. Climate addresses the hurricane season and why hurricanes are named. Students will also discuss how the area uses farmland and the strong tourist industry in the Human-environment interaction section. Learning that Huntsville, Alabama is nicknamed “Rocket City, U.S.A." leads to a class discussion about attending Space Camp.

Closing

Students are encouraged to share what they know with the use of a spinner activity. After picking a state and sharing a fact, the activity continues when classmates call on each other.
