The lesson gives an overview of several text features that helps a student comprehend informational text. Each feature is then practiced. To start, the use of bold, highlighted and words in italics are discussed. The students read a passage on dolphins and answer questions. Following this, the students review headings and subheadings. They read text about NativeAmerican homes to practice. Next, the use of picture captions to gain information is presented and students refer to the captions to answer questions about hurricanes. Continuing on, number data and chronological order is practiced by reading a passage about California. The final reading focuses on the use of inference to answer questions about Yosemite.
