K.CC.A.3
Discuss with students that numbers are all around us and it is useful to be able to recognize them. If you want to travel with the train, for example, you need to know which track to go to.
Practice recognizing numbers to 10 by dragging matching numbers to each other.
The teacher points to the numbers 11-20 and says them out loud. Next the numbers are in a random order. Point at the number and ask students to hold up the matching number card. Check that students recognize the numbers 16, 18, and 12 by circling the correct number.
To check understanding you can ask the following questions:
Where might you see or find these numbers around you?
For additional practice you can write a few numbers on the board and ask students to hold up the matching number card.
Students start their practice by circling all the matching numbers, then to drag matching numbers to a box, and finally by writing the given number.
Discuss with students why it is useful to be able to recognize numbers to 20. Numbers are all around us. When you travel with a train, you need to know which track to go to. Check that students understand by having them play memory with number cards from 11-20. You can choose to also include number cards to 10.
Students who have difficulty can practice with the numbers to 10. They can use flashcards or match number cards together. Students looking for challenge can work on naming and writing numbers to 20.
Number cards 11-20, optional number cards 1-10.
