Students recognize amounts to 10 by comparing different amounts with each other. They learn to indicate which has more or less.

K.CC.C.7
You need this be be able to compare numbers and learn which is more or less. This is useful to figure out if you have enough of something. An example would be if you want to hand out cookies.
Let students count the objects first and then count them together out loud. What do you see when you look around? Count objects in the class that are less than 10. Examples might be: tables in a row, chairs in a group or plants.
Ask seven students to come to the front of the class on the left hand side (from the student's perspective). Choose 10 other students and have them stand on the right hand side. You can also do this with objects. Count the left group counting out loud. Also count the students/objects in the right group out loud. Remind students of their knowledge of counting to 10. Which group has more children? The right, because 10 comes after 7. Practice this with the other images on the interactive whiteboard.
Check that students recognize more or less by asking them to put up more or less fingers for each image.
What is more or less than 6?
What is more or less than 5?
What is more or less than 8?
Students practice recognizing more or less objects by counting. First by comparing the different amounts to each other, then by comparing a number to an amount.
Check if students can compare amounts by counting amounts and comparing the numbers. Emphasize that it is useful to use their counting to 10 skills and to decide where the number comes in counting, is it first or later in the sequence.
The students who have difficulty counting to ten can practice using blocks as support to their counting. Students who are able to recognize amounts without counting can be challenged to compare amounts to numbers 1-10.
