The students can recognize amounts from 1-10 as represented by different pictures and compare the amounts. They learn to indicate more or less.
K.CC.C.6
K.CC.C.7
This is needed to compare numbers with each other and to know which is more or less. This is useful to determine if you have enough of something. An example would be if you want to hand out cookies.
Students play a game in which they must recognize amounts to 10. Make pairs and give each pair 10 blocks. By turns one student sets down an amount of blocks and the other student says how many blocks are set down.
Ask four students to come stand in front of the classroom and set them on the left hand side (from the student's perspective). Choose 6 more students and set them on the right hand side. You can also do this with objects. Count the number of students on the left out loud. Then count the number of students on the right out loud. Link to their knowledge of counting to 10 to determine if a number comes earlier or later in the counting sequence. In the next slide you see squirrels. Which one has more squirrels? On the right, because 6 comes after 4. Practice this with the acorns as well. Ask how students came to their answer.
Check that students recognize more or less of numbers by asking the following questions:
How do you know that there is more of something?
How do you know that there is less of something?
Students practice recognizing more or less by counting objects. First by comparing different amounts, and later by comparing a number to an amount.
Check that students can compare amounts by drawing more and less cookies. Ask the students to draw on their own and check answers together by showing an example on the interactive whiteboard.
Students who still have difficulty counting to 10 can practice counting and can also use blocks as support. Student who recognize amounts without counting can practice with comparing numbers to 10.
