In this lesson, students will learn about the periodic table: the organization of it, properties of elements in each group, and how to read it.
NGSS: MS-PS1-1
Students will be able to explain how elements are arranged in the periodic table.
Students will review basic concepts of atomic composition (atoms, neutrons, protons) through a think-pair-share activity.
The lesson will go over a bit of the historical background of how previous iterations of the table were constructed. Students will then dive into how the current table is constructed and organized. They will look at why rows and columns include certain atoms. They will also look at the properties of certain groups on the table (metals, non-metals, transition metals, noble gases). For practice, they will also complete some exercises to identify certain characteristics (mass, valence electrons, properties) of elements based on their position of the table.
Review the periodic table with 10 multiple-choice questions.
Students will recall what they learned by completing an exit slip.
