Students will practice reading words with the r-controlled vowels er, ir, and ur. They will listen to words to determine if the words have that sound as well as read them.

Introduction
Students begin by listening to the homophones piece and peace. They will hear that two words can sound the same but have different spellings. This is related to letter sounds that can sound the same but have different spellings.
Instruction
The lesson begins by working with the /er/ spelled er. Students learn that is the most common way of spelling the sound and it is also used as a suffix. Students are shown a list of words with this spelling followed by using the words in sentences. They practice flashcards with “er” words. Last, using pictures, they listen to words and pick out the “er” ones. The next letter pair “ur” is practiced. Students are reminded that reading helps them to be familiar with more words. Students are shown a set of words, one with a misspelling, and are instructed to circle the correct word. There is a set of flashcards to practice “ur” words. Again, they are given words to listen to with a picture to pick out the “ur” word. The final letter pair the students work with is “ir.” They drag a bird to a nest to reveal some examples of these words. The students are given a set of clues that match a word with this spelling pattern. More practice is provided with flashcards for “ir” words and another listening exercise with this spelling for the /er/.
