Students will practice reading words with the r-controlled vowels ar and or. They will listen to words to determine if they have that sound as well as read them.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.1.3; CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.2.3
Students will be able to read words with r-controlled vowels.
Students begin by reviewing the 5 vowels. They listen to the short and long sound of each vowel. This is important because all words contain a vowel and there are rules to help them sound out words.
Students are shown word pairs such as ton and torn and they listen to hear how r changes the vowel sound. Then, they begin working with the ar which sounds like the word “are.” Next, they watch a video to see and hear several words with this vowel pattern. For further practice, they are shown pictures and they have to pick the one that has the r-controlled vowel. Students then practice a set of timed flashcards with ar words. Moving on, students work the r-controlled vowel or - which sounds like the word “or.” They listen to 3 words with this sound and match it to a picture. Continuing on, students listen for the sound and then check to see if they are right. More practice is provided with another set of flashcards with or words. There are two drills with mixed practice with words that contain either the or or ar. The drill includes sorting the words according to the sound and completing a word ladder
Students respond to ten multiple-choice and true/false questions.
Students will complete a poem that uses r-controlled words.
