In this lesson, students will learn more about protons, neutrons, and electrons, while also reviewing some basic properties of an atom. For an introduction to atoms, please check out this lesson.
NGSS: MS-PS1-1
Students will be able to identify key structures and features of an atom.
Students will draw the subatomic particles of an atom.
Students will discuss how small an atom is. They will learn about amu, atomic charges (ions), and review isotopes. They will also cover how atomic mass and mass number is calculated. Finally, students will learn about the forces that keep atoms together.
Students will practice these skills through embedded questions in the slides. They will practice identifying the number of each subatomic particle, the mass number, and the charge on each particle. Students will also practice their math skills by finding the atomic mass of an element with more than
one isotope.
Review protons, neutrons, and electrons with 5 true/false, 4 multiple-choice, and 1 short answer questions.
Students will close with an exit slip reviewing properties of the
subatomic particles.
