Pronouns help us communicate concisely. Correctly identifying an antecedent with a pronoun is not always easy even for good communicators, particularly when there are multiple characters or proper nouns to keep track of.
This lesson teaches students how to identify the antecedent in a sentence (try replacing a noun with a pronoun until it makes sense).
A fun story involving aliens is weaved throughout the lesson to give students opportunities to practice pronoun-antecedent agreement.

Learning objective
Students will be able to make sure pronouns agree with their antecedents.
Introduction
Students will match nouns with pronouns to complete a puzzle. They will read a passage and match the picture to the pronoun.
Instruction
Students will be introduced to the concept of antecedents, nouns that pronouns replace or refer to. They will practice identifying antecedents in different sentences. They can ask three questions to make sure the pronoun and antecedent agree: Is the antecedent a person or thing? Is the antecedent male or female? Is the antecedent singular or plural?
Students will read sentences and choose the right pronoun for each antecedent. They will then read sentences and identify mismatches in pronoun-antecedent agreement. They will also read and fix a story by correcting the pronoun-antecedent mismatches.
Quiz
Students are given 10 questions and are asked to choose or identify the correct pronoun based on the referenced antecedent.
Closing
Have students recall how to make sure pronouns and antecedents match. Lastly, students will "blast" any pronoun-antecedent mismatches with a "laser cannon" before the pronoun-antecedent mismatches reach Earth.
