We can imagine our feelings as a bucket which gets filled when we are treated well, and which gets emptied when we are treated badly. By recognizing how we feel when people treat us nicely (or not), we can better understand how we should treat others. Ultimately, it comes down to the golden rule: treat others the way you would like to be treated!
Students will practice being a bucket filler.
Students are asked to reflect on what it means to be a bucket filler and a bucket dipper. Have them think about how they feel when they have their bucket filled or emptied. Keeping that in mind, why is it important that we act as bucket fillers?
Students are given hypothetical situations and asked how they should respond to help fill somebody else's bucket, rather than empty it. How many different ways can students think to fill somebody else's bucket, and make them feel good and included?
The closing slides give students three hypothetical scenarios that are meant to be acted out so that they can better understand what it means to help make somebody feel good (and what it looks like when we exclude others and make them feel bad).
How can you fill somebody's bucket today? Why is it important to be the type of person that makes others feel good, rather than make them feel bad?
