Students are able to round decimal numbers to the hundredths place. They can use the decimal place value chart as support.
Discuss with students that it is important to be able to round decimal numbers to the hundredths place, so they can calculate faster.
Show the students the three scales with fruit. Every scale has a number with two or three decimal places. Ask students to round the decimal number and write their answers down. Before you check answers, ask students to explain their thinking. When do you round up? When do you round down? Which digit do you look at?
Explain that you can round a decimal number to the hundredths place by looking at the digit that is after the hundredths place, the thousandths place. It is the third digit after the decimal point. If the number is 4 or less, the amount of hundredths does not change. If the number is 5 or greater, then you add 1 hundredth. You can use the decimal place value chart to help clarify this. Practice this with the students by dragging the number to the decimal place value chart and then rounding the number by looking at the digit in the thousandths place.
To check that students understand rounding decimal numbers to the hundredths place, you can ask the following questions:
- Which digit do you look at if you want to round to the hundredths place?
- What do you do if the last digit is a 5?
- What happens with the hundredths if the number in the thousandths place is 5 or greater?
Students first practice rounding to hundredths, with decimal numbers with 3 decimal places. These exercises are multiple choice. Next students must determine the answer themselves and fill in the blank. Ask students to explain their thinking and how they know when to round up or down. Make sure they can explain that 4 or less is rounding down, and 5 or greater is rounding up.
Repeat the goal and ask why it is important to be able to round decimal numbers. You can use rounding of decimal numbers when you want to approximately calculate quickly in the future. Ask students which digit they look at when they want to round to the hundredths place, namely the thousandths. To check their knowledge, you can show a few numbers that students must round to the thousandths place. You can erase the grey boxes to uncover the answers.
If students have difficulty with rounding to the hundredths place, have them practice with rounding whole numbers and tenths. Also make sure they use the decimal place value chart to help them visualize the steps.
