Students learn the parts of numbers from 100 to 999 using hundreds, tens, and ones. They learn the place value of hundreds, tens, and ones.

Discuss with students that it is important to know how numbers to 1,000 are put together so you can use them in calculations later.
The interactive whiteboard has a few numbers. Fill in the missing numbers. Ask the students to count backwards to fill in the missing numbers. Next point at an object on the interactive whiteboard and ask how much it costs.
Show the hundreds, tens, and ones on the interactive whiteboard. Explain that a hundreds is a group of 100, a tens a group of 10, and ones are the numbers from 1 to9. Show MAB-blocks on the interactive whiteboard and/or in class to explain the hundreds, tens, and ones again. Next show the Hundreds-Tens-Ones(HTO) chart and the diagram of the number with the hundreds, tens and ones labelled. As a class, count the blocks on the interactive whiteboard and determine how many hundreds, tens, and ones there are. Tell students that 800, 30 and 9 blocks together make 839. Name the value of the numbers and complete the HTO-chart. Practice as a class on another example where you have to determine the hundreds, tens, and ones, and complete a HTO-chart. Ask the students how they came up with that answer.
Check that students understand how numbers to 1,000 are put together by asking the following questions:
- What are hundreds? How do you know?
- What are tens? How do you know?
- What are ones? How do you know?
- Write down the hundreds, tens, and ones of the number 583.
Students first practice with the hundreds, tens, and ones by combining numbers. Then they have to indicate which number has been jumped to on the number line, and then they determine the value of digits in numbers.
Discuss with students the importance of knowing how numbers to 1,000 are put together, so you can calculate with them later. Check that students understand what hundreds, tens and ones are and what number they make when you put them together. Ask students to discuss in groups. They have to make numbers to 1,000 with the digits given on the interactive whiteboard. They can hold up the numbers they create so you can check their answers. They then must write the smallest possible number and the biggest possible number they can create with the given digits.
Students who have difficulties with parts of numbers can be supported by using the HTO-chart. They can also make use of the MAB-blocks or other manipulatives to visually support their understanding of hundreds, tens, and ones.
