General

Students learn to fill in a Tens Ones chart with numbers to 100. They can distinguish tens and ones in numbers to 100.

Common core standard(s)

1.NBT.B.2

Relevance

Discuss with students that it is important to know how numbers to 100 are put together so you can prepare yourself for calculating with these numbers.

Introduction

The interactive whiteboard shows a range of different numbers. Point at a number and ask students to say the number aloud. Repeat with a few numbers. The next image shows chocolate bars in rows of ten. The students need to count the bars. Encourage them to use skip counting.

Development

Show tens and ones on the interactive whiteboard. Explain that tens are a group of 10 and ones are the numbers 1 to 9. Show the MAB blocks on the interactive whiteboard and/or in class. Using the blocks, clarify the explanation of tens and ones. Next show the chart of tens and ones. Discuss an example with tens and ones. The amount is in the diagram, and shows a completed TO(tens/ones)-chart. Practice as a class, have students say what the tens and ones should be and complete the TO-chart. Next show a diagram of a number without any visual support material. Ask them to complete the TO chart and then practice completing a few exercises without visual support material. Students must indicate what are the tens and what are the ones of the given number. Practice a few exercises as a class. Most have visual support but the final example has only the number.

Check that students understand how numbers to 100 are put together and that they can complete a TO-chart by asking the following questions:
What are tens? How do you know?
What are ones? How do you know?
Fill in a TO-chart for the number 83. What are the tens? ones?

Guided Practice

The students first practice with completing TO-charts with visual support. Then they practice with only having the number to complete the TO chart.

Closing

Discuss with students what the importance of knowing how numbers to 100 work is, and why it is useful to be able to complete a TO chart. Check that students know what tens and ones are, and that they can fill these into a TO chart. To practice this again, there are a few diagrams on the interactive whiteboard. Ask students if they are correct. If they are incorrect, ask students how they should be fixed or corrected.

Teaching Tip

Students who have difficulty with placing numbers into the TO-chart can be helped by visualizing the amounts with MAB blocks or manipulatives. Have them move the blocks of the number to the positions on the chart.
