Personification is when human-like qualities are given to objects or ideas. This is a technique used to make writing more memorable and relatable. There are many common idioms in English that use personification, such as when we say that something we want is "calling our name," or when we say that "time flies."
Personification stimulates readers' imagination because it forces them to visualize something that isn't possible, causing them to engage more deeply in the story. Being able to identify personification in a text and use it in one's own writing is an important and fun skill for students to learn.

Learning Objective
Students will be able to identify personification and use it in their writing.
Introduction
Students will read Emily Dickinson's poem Autumn and identify the human qualities or traits. Explain that personification is when human qualities are given to objects or ideas and why it is important to recognize them while reading.
Instruction
Students will read Afternoon on a Hill by Edna St. Vincent Millay and answer questions about how certain objects are examples of personification. Next, students will read sentences and determine whether they are personification. They will also read some personified statements and explain what they mean.
Students will read a passage about a boy named Ted who loves dinosaurs and find examples of personification. They will also read an excerpt from William Wordsworth's I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud.
Quiz
These problems reinforce what personification is, and then give students sentences that may or may not incorporate it.
Closing
The closing slide prompts students to write at least three examples of personification about their favorite season. Encourage students to share their creations with the class!
