Students will learn the order of operations using the acronym PEMDAS to work through the steps. As each step is taught, students will practice the skills, putting them together to solve equations using order of operations.

The lesson begins with a discussion of basic rules we all have to follow, leading to the understanding that rules help people to agree.
The lesson continues with the question: What is the answer to 5 + 5 × 2, relating to money someone has received for their birthday. With possible answers of `$`20 or `$`15, students recognize that a math problem needs one correct answer. This problem is solved later in the lesson after the students learn the steps to the order of operations. Next, the acronym PEMDASis explored. Each letter is defined: Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiply or Divide, then Add or subtract with practice of each step. Along with this, working left to right is emphasized. Using a PEMDAS checklist, students have the opportunity of solving several multi-step equations. A discussion of brackets as another grouping tool is also discussed.
Students respond to ten multiple-choice and true/false questions.
Students will write and solve their own equations. They will share these with other classmates and have them solve them.
