In this lesson, students will learn about daily life within the New England Colonies. They will explore emigration, religious beliefs, economy, and government.
Students will be able to describe the characteristics of daily life within the New England colonies.
Students will begin the lesson by making observations of an image of New England Colonists. Students will analyze the image and discuss what they notice. They will be asked to make inferences about the colonists based on what they see.
Students explore a timeline to learn which explorers founded Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire and when they were founded. The students will locate the colonies on a map and learn about the advantages and disadvantages of the climate of NewEngland. Students will watch a video and describePilgrims and Puritans. They will also watch a video and take notes to learn about New England’seconomy and how the colonists earned a living to provide for their families. Students will explore the daily roles of men, women, and children. Lastly, they will learn about the two systems of government in the New England colonies.
Students will respond to 10 questions, including 5 true/false, 3 multiple-choice, and 2 open-ended.
Students will watch a video on the New England Colonists, discuss what stood out, and share any new information they learned. They will “spin the wheel” and describe key terms mentioned in the lesson by creating a poster board with words, phrases, and visuals.
