Discuss with students that it is important to know neighboring tens numbers, because you learn where a number sits. Explain that the mail carrier then knows where a letter needs to go.
Introduction
Set students in pairs with two sets of number cards from 1-9. The first student selects two cards and creates a number. They set it on the table and says the number out loud. Their neighbor checks that they said it correctly, and then they get to create a number and say it out loud.
Development
Start with explaining what tens are, and what tens numbers are. A tens is a group of 10 and always ends on a 0. Say the tens numbers aloud. Explain that neighboring tens number are the tens numbers that a given number sits between. Using the number line, show that 34 sits between 30 and 40. Next explain that you can find the neighboring tens numbers by putting a number on the number line and looking which tens number comes before the given number, and which comes after. Next ask students if they can determine the neighboring tens numbers of the given numbers and write them down.
Check that students understand neighboring tens numbers by asking the following questions:
