Students learn to multiply with two numbers to 100.
CCSS.Math.Content.4.NBT.B.5
Students will be able to multiply with two numbers to 100.
Show a few multiplication problems on the interactive whiteboard. The students solve these and then drag the cover aside to show the correct answers.
Show the problem on the interactive whiteboard and ask the students how they would calculate the answer. Then show that you can solve it in steps by splitting the problem up into multiple problems. Solve them, then add the answers together. After that, show some other possible methods of solving the problem. Explain that you can change the number in the problem, so that it is a round number that is easier to multiply by. Next you calculate how much you have in excess or how much you are short. In the example you multiplied 64 two times too many, so you subtract this from the total. Have the students calculate a few problems and ask how they did this. Finally you show how you can solve a story problem. You have the students determine what kind of problem it is, which numbers you need to make the problem and then solve the problem. Afterwards have the students solve the story problems on their own.
Check whether the students can multiply with two numbers to 100 with the following question:
- How do you solve 35 × 79?
The students test their understanding of multiplying with two numbers to 100 through ten exercises. For some of these they must choose from possible answers, others they must come up with the answer on their own, and others are story problems.
You discuss once again with the students that it is important to be able to multiply with two numbers to 100, because that is how you can solve multiplication problems with large numbers. As a closing activity, let the students work in groups. Together, they come up with a problem and then solve the problem individually. Next they discuss with each other how they have solved the problem and whether they have the same answer.
Have students that have difficulty with multiplication with two numbers to 100 first practice with multiplication problems which consist of one number from 1 to 9. The other number is a random number to 100. Have the students solve this first. Then they practice with tens numbers and a random number to 100. Afterwards they can practice with two random numbers to 100.
