Introduction
Show a few multiplication problems on the interactive whiteboard. The students solve these and then drag the cover aside to show the correct answers.
Instruction
Show the problem on the interactive whiteboard and ask the students how they would calculate the answer. Then show that you can solve it in steps by splitting the problem up into multiple problems. Solve them, then add the answers together. After that, show some other possible methods of solving the problem. Explain that you can change the number in the problem, so that it is a round number that is easier to multiply by. Next you calculate how much you have in excess or how much you are short. In the example you multiplied 64 two times too many, so you subtract this from the total. Have the students calculate a few problems and ask how they did this. Finally you show how you can solve a story problem. You have the students determine what kind of problem it is, which numbers you need to make the problem and then solve the problem. Afterwards have the students solve the story problems on their own.
