It is useful to learn how to make fractions so you can quickly determine which portion you have of a total and determine which fraction represents that.
Introduction
Students determine which fraction is shown by the image given.
Development
Briefly remind students that a fraction is made of a numerator and a denominator. Explain how you can simplify a fraction by dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number. Demonstrate this with 3//6. You divide both 3 and 6 by 3 and then the simplified fraction becomes 1//3. Use the images to show students that the quantities are the same. Show the problem with the ladybugs. There are 3 leaves with ladybugs on them. You make the fraction by setting the portion as the numerator and the total as the denominator. The fraction is 3//9. Look to see which number both parts of the fraction are divisible by to simplify as far as possible. Both are divisible by 3 and your simplified fraction becomes 1//3. Use the next two problems to check that students are able to determine fractions from the given examples. Show the problem 7 of the 14. Make the fraction by setting the portion as the numerator and the total as the denominator. Next simplify 7//14 to 1//2 by dividing by 7. Students then practice with the next two problems. You can solve the problem in steps by first making the fraction and checking it, and then to simplify the fraction. Emphasize with the fraction story problems that you first must determine which numbers are important for the fraction word problem and then that you must say or write the problem, before solving the problem. Then have students do the following fraction story problems.

Guided practice
Students practice with multiple choice questions to determine which fraction matches the image given, then they must compose the fractions, and finally also simplify the fractions. They must also solve fraction word problems.

Discuss with students that it is important to be able to determine fractions from real life examples. To close ask the students to solve a mix of problems in different contexts.
