Students will be able to use long division to divide a number to 100 with remainder.
Discuss the division problems on the board with the students and have them solve the problems using long division.
Explain that with long division you put the numbers of the problem next to one another. First you write the divisor on the left. Next you write the dividend to the right with a box around it. You will write your answer on top of the box. Show that you first look at the first digit. That is the 2 of 25. You cannot divide 2 by 3. So you include the 5. From 25 your can take away 24 (8 × 3). Emphasize that to help you can make a row of the table of 3. In this way you can quickly check what the largest number is that you can take away. Write the number 24 under the 25 and subtract. You write the answer (1) underneath. You write the 8, from 3 × 8, as the answer above the box. 1 can no longer be divided by 3, so that is your remainder. Now the answer is 8 R 1. Next you can practice solving the problem 95 ÷ 8 together with the students. You may remove the cover to show the helping row. Now have the students solve the following two problems using long division.
Check whether the students can divide a number to 100 with remainder using long division by asking the following question:
- What steps do you follow to solve a division problem with remainder using long division?
The students test their understanding of using long division to divide a number to 100 with remainder through ten exercises. For some of these exercises the divisor is a one-digit number, and for the rest the divisor is a two-digit number.
Discuss once again the importance of being able to use long division to divide a number to 100 with remainder. As a closing activity you have the students solve for the numbers that should be behind the paint.
Have students that have difficulty using long division to divide a number to 100 with remainder first practice using long division to divide a number to 100 without remainder.
