General

This lesson goes over the short and long vowel sounds. Students will complete various activities, including hearing a word or seeing a picture of a word to help practice identifying the long and short vowel sounds. This will help them strengthen their phonemic awareness as they begin to build their knowledge of letter-sound correspondence.

Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.3b

Learning objective

Students will be able to identify and differentiate between the long and short vowel sounds that are made by the vowels A, E, I, O, and U in various words.

Introduction

Students will review the five vowels: A, E, I, O, and U with a short video. Explain that almost all words in the English language have at least one vowel in them. Vowels can make two kinds of sounds: long and short.

Instruction

Explain that long vowel sounds say their names. As a class, students will say each long vowel sound. Next, they will look at a few pictures and listen to the long vowel sound at the beginning of each word. Students will also listen and say each short vowel sound. Similar to the long vowel sounds, students will look at pictures and identify the beginning short vowel sounds.

After going over the long and short vowel sounds, students will sort text-to-speech widgets by their beginning sounds. Students will then determine whether words they read on the slide are long or short vowel sounds. They will look at pictures and words with missing letters. They will write in the missing letter and circle whether the vowel makes a short or long sound.

Quiz

Students are given ten questions to review long and short vowel sounds. They will identify the long or short vowels by listening to words and matching vowel sounds to their letters.

Closing

Have students recall the long and short vowel sounds. Lastly, they will play a spin the wheel activity.
