I can describe how matter and mass are always conserved during chemical reaction
8,000 schools use Gynzy
92,000 teachers use Gynzy
1,600,000 students use Gynzy
In this lesson, students will learn about how mass stays through a chemical reaction. They will complete a lab with the lesson.
NGSS: MS-PS1-5
Students will be able to describe how matter and mass are always conserved during chemical reactions.
Students will reflect on a before-and-after picture of a fire. What happens when wood burns? Describe what happened to the log? Where did it go?
Students will discuss the definition of conservation of mass during chemical reactions. They will review examples of where this takes place in the real world and on the molecular level. They will then do a quick lab that demonstrates this concept. Students will use a balance to find the mass of an Alka Seltzer tablet and amount of water in a plastic bag. Then students will place that tablet in the bag and make observations.
Students will recall what they learned by explaining how mass is conserved in a chemical formula.
Students will be split into groups of 2-4. Each group needs:
- 1 paper/plastic cup
- zip-lock bags
- water
- graduated cylinder
- 2-3 tablets of Alka Seltzer
- electronic balance
Students can use the handout (linked on Slide 10) to complete the lab.
