CCSS.Math.Content.4.NBT.A.2
Students will be able to compare numbers to 1,000,000.
Students will listen to numbers in the thousands and ten-thousands and then write them. They will review how learning a new place value builds on the knowledge they already have about this topic.
The lesson works with numbers in the hundred thousands in several ways. The lesson begins with a review of place value names to one million. Fast facts are then shared to promote understanding of six-digit numbers such as miles to the moon and minutes in a year. Continuing on, the students listen to and write these numbers in standard form. The next skill practiced is reading numbers in word form and then writing them in standard form. The value of a particular digit is discussed when working with numbers in expanded form. Using greater than, less than, or equal signs students compare digits in the hundred thousands. They also compare digits to order them from least to greatest and greatest to least. A challenge activity requires students to add and subtract these numbers mentally such as, write the number that is 10,000 less than 999,999.
Students respond to ten multiple-choice and true/false questions.
Working with a partner or a team, students will shake dice to form six-digit numbers. They are challenged to make the greatest then the least number with 8-sided dice.
