CCSS.Math.Content.4.NBT.A.2
Students will be able to read, write and compare numbers to 100,000.
Students will review by listening to numbers less than 10,000. They will learn that each place moving from right to left is 10 times the value.
The lesson works with numbers in the ten thousands in several ways. Place names are reviewed and students drag digits to make their own 6 digit number. Fast facts are shared to promote understanding of six-digit numbers such as the number of seats in a sports stadium. Continuing on, the students listen to and write these numbers in standard form. Further practice with standard form is provided by having students discover a number from a list of clues. Moving on, the students work with numbers in word form. For practice, students give thumbs up or down to a correct match of word form to standard form. The value of a particular digit is discussed when working with numbers in expanded form. Students will convert standard form to expanded form. Using greater than, less than or equal signs students compare digits in the ten thousands. Students will sort numbers into greater than and less than categories. A challenge activity features New York trivia to write the numbers in the three forms.
Students respond to ten multiple-choice and true/false questions.
In two teams, students play a memory game.
