Students learn to recognize the numbers 1-10 from their spoken form and can write the number. Students can write the number, say the word, and write the number in words.
K.CC.A.3
Explain to students that numbers are everywhere around us and that it is important to recognize them. An example is if you want to know how old someone has become.
The students practice recognizing numbers to 10 by dragging them to the right box.
The teacher points to the numbers 1-10 on the interactive whiteboard and says the number aloud. Ask the students practice repeating the word after you. Next the numbers are in random order. Point at the number and ask students to say the number aloud. Finally you give a number and give students a moment to write down their own answer.
Check that students understand by asking the following questions:
Where might you come across these numbers?
Does anyone live in a house with a number higher than 10?
How old are you?
Which number do you see? You can choose to write more numbers on the board and ask students to name them.
The students practice by linking a spoken and visually presented number to each other, and then by writing down the number for a spoken number.
Discuss why it is important to know and recognize numbers to 10. Numbers are all around us. IT can be useful to know how old someone turned. Check that students understood by asking them to practice in pairs. Each pair gets a set of number cards to 10. The first student says a number to ten and the second must find the matching card. They take turns.
Strong students can practice naming and writing the numbers to 20.
Number cards from 0-10.
