CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.6.5a
Students will be able to use the context of a sentence or passage in order to interpret similes, metaphors, and personification.
Students will review similes, metaphors, and personification, and read examples of each. Students will read a passage about a diver and highlight the simile, personification, and metaphor. Discuss why it is important to interpret similes, metaphors, and personification.
To interpret a simile, students need to think about what the author chose to compare something to. Students will read a paragraph and think about why the author would compare the character's thoughts to ping-pong balls. They will read another paragraph about a dancer and interpret the simile. Next, students will read about a quarterback and interpret the metaphor. To interpret an author's personification, the reader needs to consider the qualities of the action or characteristic that has been assigned to the non-human object. Have students interpret the personification of a river and vision.
Students will respond to 8 true/false and multiple-choice questions.
Students will recall key ideas from the lesson:
- Why do authors use similes, metaphors, and personification?
- How will thinking about comparison characteristics help me?
Lastly, students will write a paragraph about their favorite day at recess that includes a metaphor, simile, and personification.
