General
Students learn about the geography, environmental challenges, and way of life in the Indus Valley Civilizations. The lesson describes both the Harappan and Mohenjo-daro civilizations. Students participate in a fill-in-the-blank activity, use graphic organizers, and compare what they’ve learned in this lesson to what they have learned about other ancient civilizations.
Learning Objective
Students will be able to analyze the culture, geography, history, and daily life of the Indus River Civilizations. They will also be able to describe how the physical characteristics of river valleys supported permanent settlements and the rise of early civilizations.
Introduction
Have students observe the two pictures on the board. Then they will try to predict the answers to questions about the Indus River Civilizations based on what they observe. After this, explain the location and geography, including the surrounding rivers and mountain ranges.
Instruction
Discuss the significance of the monsoons and other geographic features. Have students drag the pin to locate different features on the map. Next, describe the Harappan civilization and their accomplishments, like the formation of sewers and planned communities. Discuss some of the different jobs and compare them to the jobs we see in our communities today. Describe the language and other customs of this civilization, then have students fill in the blanks of the statements on the board. Discuss some of the factors that may have contributed to the fall of the Indus River Civilizations. Finally, have students fill in a graphic organizer, brainstorming the accomplishments of the Harappan and Mohenjo-Daro civilizations.
