In this lesson, students will learn how to use the correct pronouns in sentences when writing and talking. They will look at two charts to assist them in deciding which pronoun to use. There will be activities for students to practice using the correct pronouns.

Introduction
Students will play a game blasting all the pronoun antecedents. They will also read sentences with underlined antecedents and fill in the blank with the correct pronoun. For example, the sentence may say, "Priya always fights with [her] little brother." Students will discuss why it is important to avoid shifts in pronoun person and number.
Instruction
Students will be introduced to the concept of inappropriate shifts in pronoun number (e.g., "The kids love gaming. He plays Xbox every day.") and person (e.g., "If people exercise a lot, you will stay fit."). They can avoid shifts in person by asking whether the antecedent is first, second or third person. There will be a chart provided so students can visualize this with different types of pronouns, including subjective, objective, and possessive. Students will then read sentences and identify the antecedents and corresponding pronouns. They can avoid inappropriate shifts in number by asking whether the antecedent is singular or plural. There will be a similar chart showing how to avoid inappropriate shifts in number. They will also practice spotting common inappropriate shifts in pronoun number by reading sentences and identifying antecedents and pronouns.
Next, students will read several sentences and detect whether there are pronoun shifts. They will also discuss the singular "they." In cases where that is a person's preferred pronoun or if the gender of a person isn't known, it is acceptable to use "they" for a singular antecedent.

Students are given 10 questions in which they review how to avoid inappropriate shifts in pronoun number and person.
Closing
Have students recall what they learned in this lesson. Their last activity will be to open the door that holds treasure by dragging the correct pronouns to complete the sentences.
