Students will be able to halve decimal numbers, or halve whole numbers to get a decimal number.
Introduction
The students practice halving even numbers.
Instruction
Explain that you halve a decimal number with two decimal places by first halving the number in front of the decimal point and then the number after the decimal point. You add the answers together. Then have the students practice with the following problems on their own. Next you discuss how you can turn a decimal number with one decimal place into a decimal number with two decimal places by adding a 0 at the end. After that you solve in the same way as you would with any other decimal number with two decimal places. Have the students practice the problems on the board individually. Then, discuss that you can halve an odd whole number by splitting the number into the largest divisible number and 1. Have the students solve the next few problems on their own and then walk them through the steps of solving a story problem. Finally, have the students solve the next story problems on their own.
Check whether the students can divide a decimal number by asking the following question:
- How can you halve a decimal number?
Quiz
The students test their understanding of halving decimal numbers through ten exercises. For some of the exercises the students are given possible answers to the half of a number, and for others they must come up with the half of the number on their own. Some of the exercises are story problems.
Closing
Discuss once again the importance of being able to halve decimal numbers. As a closing activity, have the students halve the amount between the two children by dragging the correct amount of money to each child.
