Students learn to master the sight words, "am," "is," and "are."
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.3c
Students will be able to recognize and read the words, "am," "is," and "are."
Students will turn to a partner and ask, "What are you wearing?" "What is she wearing?" "What are they wearing?" They will be introduced to the sight words for this lesson (am, is, are) and how they might be used.
The lesson goes through the same process for each of the three sight words. First, the word is introduced and used in sentences. After that, the teacher will lead students in saying the word and highlighting the word. With a partner, they will write the word in the air and use the word in a sentence. Students then practice writing and identifying the words. Complete the words by filling in the missing letters. Then students will do a couple of fun activities that involve identifying these sight words, like I Spy.
Students are given 10 questions in which they are asked to listen to the speaker and rearrange the letters to spell the word they hear, determine which word has been said, and decide how a word is used in a sentence.
Students will explain how being able to build and read sight words makes them a stronger reader. Ask students to spell the words. Finally, students will play a Spin the Wheel activity for each word. They will do certain actions, such as clapping and saying the word, when they land on certain numbers.
