Being able to identify and use first- and third-person is important because we freely switch between these perspectives throughout our day without even realizing it. First-person describes our own experiences, while third-person lets us see the world through someone else’s eyes.
First-person narratives use pronouns like I, me, my, we, ours, and us. Third-person narratives use pronouns like he, she, they, them, her, his, and theirs.
This lesson teaches students how to recognize the difference between first and third-person narration, and the effect that each narration style has.
- How can a story change based on which point of view it is told from?
- Can you think of any other story that would be different from another point of view?

Students will be able to understand the differences between first and third-person narration, and how to identify each style.
Turn to a partner, and ask them, would you rather have super strength or be able to fly? Students will then share their answers with the class, switching between first and third narration to describe their preference.
Go over first- and third-person, including key words. Students will read short stories and determine their point of view. They will also read the same story from two different points of view.
Students are given ten problems in which they work on recognizing the difference between first and third-person narration.
What two points of view did we learn about in this lesson? Why is it important to be able to recognize these two perspectives?
