Students will be able to discuss the effects of dramatic irony when used to create suspense or humor.
Students will recall times when they have experienced irony. They will look at the examples of studying for a test that was canceled and breaking an arm before the big game.
Students will think about the classic tale Little Red Riding Hood and how the audience knows crucial information that the character does not. Next they discuss Romeo and Juliet and how the dramatic irony in the story adds suspense. They will then read several excerpts from The Gift of the Magi and discuss as a class. After that, students will read excerpts from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain.
Review dramatic irony with 10 questions. For questions 3-10, students will read excerpts from Charles by Shirley Jackson and answer questions based on the text.
Students will recall what they learned about dramatic irony and think of a movie that contained dramatic irony.
