The students drag the fractions to the matching decimal numbers.
Instruction
Show the problem 26 ÷ 4. Explain that you are first going to determine how many times the divisor fits into the whole number. In this case that is 6 × 4 = 24. Next you subtract this from the whole number (26 - 24 = 2). You now have a remainder of 2 left over. You divide this remainder again by the divisor (4). 2 ÷ 4 = 2//4. The decimal number that matches 2//4 is 0.5. Finally you add the outcomes together for the answer: 6 + 0.5 = 6.5. Practice the next problem together with the students. For this you can write down the calculations under each step of the process. The students solve the next three problems on their own. Show the story problem and explain that you must first take the problem out of the story (283 ÷ 20=). Next you see how many times the divisor fits in the whole number (14 × 20 = 280). Subtract these from each other (283 - 280 = 3). Divide the remainder by the divisor (3 ÷ 20 = 3//20, 3//20 = 0.15). Now add the outcomes together for the answer (14 + 0.15 = 14.15). The students solve the next two story problems on their own.

Each of the exercises involves a division problem with two whole numbers that results in a decimal number as the quotient. Closing
Discuss once again the importance of being able to divide whole numbers with a decimal quotient. As a closing activity the students can work in groups of four. Have each group form pairs. Each pair comes up with a division problem with whole numbers, that has a decimal number as the quotient. Once they have the problem, they check the answer and trade their problem with the other pair. Now they try to solve the problem that the other pair of students made.
